How to arrange insurance?

Taking health insurance is compulsory by Dutch law. An average health care insurance in the Netherlands costs €106. Learn what the rules are, how you can take health insurance and which other insurances you could consider as well.

What are the rules?

Health insurance is compulsory by law in the Netherlands.
Will you only study in the Netherlands? Then you are not allowed to take out a Dutch insurance. But you can stay insured with your insurance company in Indonesia. Or take out a private international health insurance.
Do you plan to do a part-time job next to your study? Then you are obliged to take out Dutch public health insurance. This you can do after arrival in the Netherlands and after having met the required conditions: residence permit + citizen service number (BSN). If you don’t take out health insurance then you risk a penalty from the government.
Will you get a paid internship? According to information from the Zorgverzekeringslijn.nl, if you are going to undergo an internship/internship where you are paid at least as much as the Dutch minimum wage, you will be subject to compulsory insurance under the WLZ scheme.

Within what time period?

If you have received a letter from CAK, according to information from the website of Studyinholland.nl, you need to follow up on the letter within 3 months. If not, you will receive a fine of around € 402.24. This even applies if you receive a letter from CAK incorrectly.

Other insurances (optional)

Liability insurance (optional, but recommendable): In case of material/road accidents, injuries or damages.
Repatriation insurance (optional): In case you need to return to Indonesia because of illness.
Household contents insurance (optional): To cover the contents of your house in case of theft, fire or water damage.
